Installation & Setup

Unpack and inspect all components. Place on stable, level surface.

  1. Remove machine from packaging: Lift machine by carrying handle, remove all protective materials.
  2. Install foot controller: Plug foot controller into machine port, place on floor.
  3. Connect power: Plug power cord into machine and wall outlet (120V AC).
  4. Install needle: Loosen needle clamp screw, insert needle with flat side toward back, tighten screw.
  5. Wind bobbin: Place empty bobbin on winder, thread through bobbin winding tension disk.

WARNING! Keep fingers away from needle area during operation. Always turn off power when threading or changing accessories.

First-Time Operation

Power on machine; follow step-by-step threading procedure.

  1. Thread upper thread: Follow numbered threading path on machine, use built-in needle threader.
  2. Insert bobbin: Place wound bobbin in bobbin case with thread unwinding counterclockwise.
  3. Bring up bobbin thread: Hold upper thread, turn hand wheel toward you to bring up bobbin thread.
  4. Select stitch: Turn stitch selection dial to desired stitch pattern.
  5. Adjust settings: Set stitch length and width according to fabric and project requirements.
  6. Begin sewing: Place fabric under presser foot, lower foot, and gently press foot controller.

CAUTION! Always start with scrap fabric to test stitch settings. Keep work area well-lit and organized.

Stitch Selection: Turn dial to select from 15 built-in stitches. Stitch Length: Adjust from 0 (for darning) to 4mm. Stitch Width: Adjust zigzag and decorative stitch width. Reverse Stitch: Press and hold to reinforce seams. Hand Wheel: Manual control of needle position, always turn toward you.

Presser Feet: Quick-change system - lift lever to remove, snap on to install. Feed Dogs: Lower for free-motion work using lever at back of free arm. Bobbin Winder: Located on hand wheel, automatically stops when bobbin is full.

Threading & Bobbin

  1. Upper Threading: Follow numbered path - from spool pin through tension discs, take-up lever, to needle.
  2. Needle Threader: Push lever down gently, hook thread through guide, release lever to pull thread through needle.
  3. Bobbin Winding: Place empty bobbin on winder, thread through tension disk, press bobbin winder to engage.
  4. Bobbin Insertion: Place bobbin in case with thread unwinding counterclockwise, pull thread through slot.
  5. Bring Up Bobbin Thread: Hold upper thread, turn hand wheel to lower and raise needle, pull up bobbin thread.

WARNING! Always raise needle to highest position before threading. Ensure presser foot is raised when threading upper thread.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and longevity.

  1. Daily: Brush out lint from bobbin area and feed dogs after each project.
  2. Weekly: Remove needle plate and clean underneath, oil moving parts if necessary.
  3. Monthly: Clean tension discs with folded fabric strip, check needle for damage.
  4. As needed: Replace needle after 8-10 hours of sewing or for each new project.

CAUTION! Always unplug machine before cleaning or maintenance. Use only Janome recommended oil.
